Information SYSTEMS MAJOR IN THE DBA PROGRAM

The DBA program with the IST major is designed to provide an academically rigorous experience to a diverse population of traditional and non-traditional students. The lock step structure allows for timely completion of the degree, whether you attend on a part-time or full-time basis. This web site contains up-to-date information about the DBA program with IST major, its preparatory requirements, advanced analytical core and the major fields.

Preparatory Requirements

IS applicants are expected to have completed an MBA or a Master's degree in Information Systems or in a closely related field from a program accredited by AACSB international. Students who lack sufficient IS background should take courses from the preparatory sequence below. The exact sequence will be determined by an advisor at the time the application is processed.

The categories and the suggested courses are listed below:

  • Business Preparatory Requirements:(15 credit hours)

    ACT 501 Financial Accounting (3 credit hours)
    FIN 501 Financial Management (3 credit hours)
    MKT 501 Marketing (Customer Focus) (3 credit hours)
    MLR 511 Organizational Behavior (3 credit hours)
    OMS 502 Statistical Methods for Business Decisions (3 credit hours)

  • IS Preparatory Requirements: (16 credit hours)
  • IST 602 Advanced programming of Business Systems (4 credit hours)
    IST 603 Systems Analysis and Methods (4 credit hours)
    IST 604 Modern Database Design and Implementation (4 credit hours)
    IST 606 Management of Business Networks (4 credit hours)


Preparatory courses can be waived based on the individual applicant's background.

Advanced Analytical Core: (14 credit hours)

All IST majors are required to complete the courses listed below:

  2. DBA 803 Research Methodolgy (4 credit hours)
  3. DBA 720 Seminar on Business Teaching Methodology (2 credit hours)
  4. IST 800 Research Design Measurements (4 credit hours)

Major Field

A student is required to complete 20 semester hours of required coursework in the major field. In addition, a student will be required to complete a minimum of 9 semester hours towards electives in consultation with the student's advisor to meet a support field requirement. It is expected that these electives will contribute towards the student's research agenda. The student will be required to complete a doctoral dissertation that carries a variable number of credit hours. The student may register for research seminar with a minimum of 6-8 credit hours (explained below) or may register for the doctoral dissertation which has a minmum of 18 credit hours.

  • Required Courses (20 credit hours)

    IST 801 Foundations of IS (4 credit hours)
    IST 802 Seminar in IS Current Topics (4 credit hours)
    IST 803 Knowledge Management (4 credit hours)
    IST 634/734 Enterprise Databases (4 credit hours)
    IST 636/736 Managing Networks and Security Risks (4 credit hours)

  • Electives: (Minimum of 9 hours) - towards a support field requirements

    These courses msut be choosen in consultation with the student's advisor and may include appropriate Masters and Doctoral course from related fields. Suggested courses in the Information Systems area include the following:

    IST 614/714 Project Management and Scheduling (4-0-4 credit hours)
    IST 635/735 Business Value Information Technology (4 credit hours)
    IST 641/741 Electronic Commerce (3 credit hours)
    IST 660/760 Business Analytics and Data Mining (4 credit hours)
    IST 664/774 Business Geographics and GIS (4 credit hours)
    IST 665/765 Enterprise Resource Planning (4 credit hours)

  • Research credit requirements

    6-8
    hours of research seminar. Student may register for research seminar credits beginning their 2nd year but before dissertation proposal defense. These research credits can be completed by taking the following courses: IST891, IST895, or IST896. Please consult an advisor for more details.

  • IST 899 Doctoral Dissertation (variable credits)

    A minimum requirement of 18 hours.
